Common Tooth Extraction Procedures
At Affiliated Periodontists of North Jersey, our team will do everything possible to prevent your teeth from failing, but when damage or decay has become too severe, we may require tooth extraction. When extraction is necessary, the ultimate goal is to reduce jaw and tooth pain, protect your surrounding teeth from damage, or prepare you for dental implant placement. We also provide wisdom teeth extraction for those who need to remove these extra teeth before they cause pain or damage to your jaw. Additionally, we may extract a tooth for multiple other reasons.
Reasons You Might Need A Tooth Extracted
-
Retained Baby Teeth
Sometimes baby teeth do not fall out on their own and may block the permanent teeth from erupting or cause damage to them. We are able to provide gentle, caring extraction of baby teeth to allow for proper growth of permanent teeth.
-
Orthodontic Treatment
For those seeking orthodontic treatment but have severely crowded teeth, tooth extraction may be necessary to allow for adequate adjustment of teeth. By removing the crowded teeth, there is more space for the teeth to adjust correctly.
-
Trauma
If a tooth has been damaged by trauma and is beyond repair, extraction and replacement with a dental implant is the best course of action. Fractured or cracked teeth are common sources of tooth pain and by removing the tooth, we can stop that pain.
-
Gum Disease or Infection
If you have severe gum disease or a tooth is heavily infected, we may need to extract it to prevent disease from spreading to surrounding teeth or other parts of the body. This will also allow for proper treatment of the disease or infection.
-
Dentures
For those seeking dentures, extraction of remaining teeth is often necessary to make space for the appliance to rest on the gums. Oftentimes it is better to remove one or two remaining teeth in order to enjoy the benefits of a full arch of strong, functional teeth.
-
Dental Implants
A failing tooth will need to be extracted in order to be replaced with a lifelike dental implant. If you are seeking full arch implant supported dentures, then we may extract all your remaining teeth in order to place four to six implants. These implants will attach to a denture appliance for a strong and stable bite.
Wisdom Teeth Concerns?
Wisdom teeth begin growing in around the late teenage and early adulthood years, but oftentimes they can cause pain or become impacted. If there is not enough space in your jaw to accommodate these extra teeth, you may experience pain, impaction and crowding as they erupt. Wisdom teeth are also susceptible to infection if they do not fully erupt, which can cause pain and swelling. We offer experienced and gentle wisdom tooth extraction to relieve you of pain and save your oral structure from damage.
Experience Gentle Extractions
Affiliated Periodontists of North Jersey has a team of experienced periodontist who can give you the most effective treatment. We offer sedation dentistry for those who have dental anxiety to make you relaxed and feel virtually no pain. Many of our patients report only feeling a slight pressure at the site of extraction. We commonly perform socket preservation bone grafts after extraction to prepare your jaw for dental implant placement. Once your problem teeth are removed, you may feel a relief of pain or discomfort and can move towards the next step in restoring function and aesthetics to your smile.
